Start with stable engineering fields

Before importing, identify the columns that describe the harness rather than the columns that only describe the current spreadsheet layout. Device, connector, cavity, pin, signal, wire, gauge, color, and termination fields are useful because they can become addressable project objects.

Keep source headers intact for traceability, but map them to clear project fields during import. That mapping is the boundary between a file-shaped dataset and an engineering model.

Resolve ambiguity before creating objects

Connection sheets commonly contain blank cells, inconsistent connector names, reused pin labels, and part numbers with more than one plausible interpretation. Import should surface those conditions as review work, not hide them behind a best guess.

  • Flag missing identifiers before creating a wire or termination.
  • Keep alternate part matches visible until an engineer selects one.
  • Separate a blank value from a deliberately unassigned value.
  • Record the source row that led to every imported object.

Validate the project after import

A successful import is not the same as a valid harness. Open the schematic, inspect representative connectors and signals, and look for disconnected or duplicated paths. Then move to the formboard and confirm that the physical route can express the intended build.

Once the project is trusted, the spreadsheet becomes an input and audit reference. The project model becomes the place where engineering changes are reviewed, versioned, and released.
